Windy Hill Studio has set up a Kickstarter campaign for the very pretty side-scrolling action platformer Orphan, which sees a young boy trying to survive an alien invasion in the wilds of the Appalachian Mountains.
With the main character silhouetted against gloomy, threatening backdrops, the obvious reference that comes to mind is Limbo, but Orphan distinguishes itself visually with some impressive lighting effects and splashes of colour.
Our protagonist here also takes a more proactive approach to defending himself. Though hiding is an option, he can gather up supplies and weapons that he finds along his journey, even turning alien laser weaponry back on its creators. We’re promised a large world with multiple paths full of secrets to find, including weapon and supply caches that can be located using a GPS tracker.
Unsurprisingly, considering how lovely it looks, Orphan was Greenlit on Steam back in December. Developer Brandon Goins, founder of WIndy Hill, says that though the basic mechanics are all in place, the Kickstarter campaign will pay for a year of development time ”needed for level design, the creation of additional weapons and enemies and the implementation of sound and music.”
Orphan’s Kickstarter campaign has a goal of $32,000, with 34 days left to go to hit that target.
