I’m going to write this post about Dungeons and Dragons: Sword Coast Legends without referencing a certain other top-down fantasy RPG that dropped recently.
Dammit. Okay, from….Now. With Dragon Age: Origins director Dan Tudge at the helm, Sword Coast Legends is bringing a pretty cool sounding DM mode to the dungeon party, which lets one player set up encounters and adventures for his or her frinds. This new trailer gives us a look at how that works.
Developer n-Space take us on a trip through a dwarven stronghold, with the game’s technical director taking the role of Dungeon Master. A glowing orb lets the players know when the DM is near, and he can spend a resource called ‘Threat’ to throw monsters, traps, puzzles and other dangers at his players.
He can even find his own loot left behind after the players wipe out his minions, allowing him to throw unique monsters and challenges into the mix. It’s a bit like messing around with some simplified mod tools in real-time. With the right group of players and a decent DM, I can see this mode being a lot of fun.
Sword Coast Legends might not look like the most beautiful thing ever made, and it might contain the world’s worst ever Scottish accent courtesy of that dwarven rogue, but it looks like it has some neat ideas that might separate it from the pack.
The game is is expected out later this year. N-Space promises a lot more information in the next few months.
