I loved Rare back in the N64 days. They were just so darn… cheeky. One of very few game studios with personality. So what became of them once they were bought out by Microsoft was disappointing, to say the least.
Thankfully, last year’s release of the excellent Rare Replay collection on Xbox One and the upcoming pirate-themed adventure Sea of Thieves on both PC and console suggest that Rare is keeping the dream alive. And now there’s reason to believe they’re bringing an old franchise back from the dead.
Thanks to some inquisitive NeoGAF users, we’ve learned of several as-yet-unannounced titles with slots on the Windows App Store. The most obvious is for a game titled “Young Conker.” While the listing shows an ESRB rating of Teen, no such entry exists on the ratings board’s official website.
Other listings include a game called Fragments, and an app called HoloStudio. While a title like Fragments is completely inscrutable, we can probably assume that HoloStudio is related to Microsoft’s Hololens augmented reality headset.
Are 3D platformers back? Last year gave us the delightful Grow Home, and with former Rare folks working on Yooka-Laylee and modern Rare working on a new Conker game, it looks like the genre may be back on the rise. Of course, this Young Conker thing may just be a naughty, nostalgic card game for Windows Phones, but I’m holding out hope for some hopping-and-bopping action.
