The insectoid aliens known as the Thargoids were staples of previous Elite titles, but the hostile bugs from parts unknown have been notably absent from Elite: Dangerous. But it looks like signs are slowly starting to appear warning of an impending invasion, and some intrepid players are around to decipher them.
Unknown probes have started to appear, and when brave explorers attempt to scan the objects, a pulse disables their ship and creates a few moments of odd sound. That sound was then decrypted into a mysterious image which Elite experts have determined can only mean one thing: the Thargoids are coming.

It’s always cool to see developers putting together in-universe reveals for upcoming content and watching communities quickly pick apart the details. Places like the in-fiction Cannon Research Group have provided players a chance to roleplay their efforts in exploring the darkest reaches of space.
Of course, that roleplay can always get a little weird. ”I suggest we submit; offer up our most private places- every last one,” writes a redditor. “I suggest that when the Aliens first appear each of us thinks of his or her most shameful secret so that the creatures may sift through them for their voyeuristic pleasure.” (Thanks to Eurogamer for collating the community’s research and finding that utterly chilling quote.)
