The version that’s currently free is actually the Multiplayer Starter Pack, which is a $15 edition of the game that lets you play competitive matches. It doesn’t include zombies, the campaign, custom games, or the ability to prestige, but hey. It’s fifteen bucks for the part of Call of Duty that most people care about. The Starter Pack is a limited release that will be disappearing forever on February 29.
I like Call of Duty just fine, but what’s more interesting to me is Activision’s experiment with this low-priced multiplayer-only version of the game. Is it a hint of a future business model? Only time will tell!
