People who love Shenmue really, REALLY love Shenmue. I was a bit young for it the first time around, but its absurd attention to detail and narrative focus means that it would probably be right up my alley. That combined with the ridiculously successful crowdfunding campaign means I’ve been watching Shenmue 3 with great interest.
And hey, that interest is being rewarded today with some sexy new screenshots! Remember what it used to be like when we got excited about screenshots? Shenmue is one of very few games for which still images are still a hot commodity.
These screens were revealed as part of Yu Suzuki’s presentation at the Monaco Anime Game International Conferences (or MAGIC, which is a terrific acronym). While Yu suggested that Shenmue might focus on story to the detriment of its graphical fidelity, those shots show off some really lovely lighting effects and environmental design.
Between the Kickstarter campaign and a later Slacker Backer drive, Shenmue 3 has raised $6,564,903 for its development, with an additional, undisclosed amount of funding coming from Sony. The game is due for release late in 2017 for both PC and PS4.
