It's difficult to understand where Crytek are coming from lately. The multi-studio company has been making headlines these past few years for all the wrong reasons, but it's hard not to be intrigued when they announce a new game.
Speaking of new games, they've just outed Hunt: Showdown - the evolution of a Hunt: Horrors of the Gilded Age announced way back in 2014.
But this is where things get a little sad. Hunt: Horrors of the Gilded Age started development in the Crytek US offices under the watchful eye of David L. Adams who, alongside his team, lost their jobs at Virgil Games when THQ filed for bankruptcy. Taking the Darksiders team under their wing, Hunt: Horrors of the Gilded Age was to be their first game. Crytek US, however, was one of the first studios to be closed when things started to go wrong for Crytek.

Using the trailer above to announce that the game is still in development might come as a surprise to anyone who's been waiting for news ever since. Most would have assumed the title went under with the studio, and with Crytek having a spotty reputation when it comes to releasing what they announce, it isn't hard to understand why people would have thought this. Despite all that, the game appears to have a slot at this year's E3 where we'll hopefully find out why we're seeing folks shoot each other rather than blasting down monsters like the original game proposed. Werewolves? Vampires? ... Squids?
Originally set to be a third-person shooter, the now renamed Hunt: Showdown has shifted to a typical first-person view. Crytek just really want to put their CryEngine to use. Understandable. Let's take a look at the original 2014 version down below.
