If there's one thing we love/hate, it's horror games. They scare us to death but we can't get enough. Consequently we're always on the lookout for a new game than innovates within the genre. Slender, P.T., Amnesia, Left 4 Dead, these types of games. The next one could be Morph Girl, out August 30.
It's an FMV adventure from new developer Jaydeb, with branching pathways, an old VHS-style of look, and a creepy girl with long hair who climbs out of the bathtub. That should be all you need to know.

The main character Elana has recently lost her wife, Rebecca, and cannot move on from her wife's death. The game would soley be a commentary on loss and depression, except for the creepy supernatural entity that begins playing/preying on Elana's loss and evoking the memories of Rebecca. We're already scared and we haven't played it yet.
Decisions have to be made all through the game that will setup a total of six endings, as the player (as Elana) has to decide whether to embrace what the creature's offering (DEAR GOD NO) or reject it and try to escape. While described as a "visual novel" it's probably closer to a Telltale game, with regular choices to make. Should you answer your phone, or throw it away and run like hell? That sort of thing.
Of course it's the style of the game (and the freaky ghost girl) that will attract the game the most attention. Normally we're not fans of FMV adventures but the standard definition non-widescreen crackly videotape recording look evokes both old family movies and 90s horrors, a match that is utterly intentional on the behalf of Jaydeb. It's certainly a game we're looking forward to trying, even though it will almost certainly give us nightmares.
Morph Girl will be available on Steam and will be released on August 30 priced £2.99/$3.99.
