The grandmaster of the FPS genre is celebrating its 35th anniversary with discounts on games from its storied history.
Texan studio id Software has been blasting away since February 1991, surviving takeovers, its founding members departing, and underwhelming games over the past 35 years.
Wolfenstein, DOOM, and Quake all made a significant impact on FPS history, and the first two have been revitalised in recent years with well-received modern entries, with Machine Games taking over the Wolfenstein series.
id Software Steam Sale Blasts Shooter Prices
The sale on Steam covers the developer’s rich history, offering price cuts of up to 75% off.
DOOM’s revival 10 years ago put the legendary shooter series back in the spotlight, and we’ve had as many mainline DOOM games in that time as we had in the preceding 23 years. The best versions of those early games are available on Steam alongside the new era, and all are on sale. You can even buy a sizeable chunk of it (everything bar DOOM: The Dark Ages and DOOM VFR) for only £22.58.
As someone who first got into PC gaming in 1997, the impact of id’s games was formative. I love the Quake series, and Quake 3 left me with sore wrists and bleary eyes after many late-night multiplayer sessions.
That’s not the best Quake these days, as the remasters of Quake and Quake II are ridiculously good. You can buy any of the Quake games for £3-5 each or the whole lot for just under 12 pounds.
Speaking of remasters, Heretic x Hexen got the same Nightdive treatment as Quake last year. The spell-casting shooters are only £9.03 and they are packed to the rafters with enhancements and even include new episodes.
Lastly, Rage didn’t get anywhere near the level of previous id juggernauts, but the games remain an important part of the developer’s history. They almost act as the bridging gap between the id of old and the id of the 2010s onwards.
The original game is better than the reception it got back at release, and for £2.99, it’s a worthwhile purchase. Meanwhile, the 2019 sequel, developed with Avalanche Studios, tried to up the ante with a more gonzo take on freeform carnage. It’s a messy follow-up, but there’s some good, goofy joy to be found in it.
The id 35th anniversary sale runs until February 15, 2026, so if your Valentine is into gore-splattered shooter action, this might be just the ticket.
