Following a complete rebalance of every primary and secondary weapon in Warframe, it is only to be expected that Digital Extremes would take similar steps to work on the game's melee weapons. Due to the fact that melee combat is a fair bit more complex and with more moving parts than firearms have (ironically so), devs have decided to do a full sweep instead of a simple balance pass.
Firstly, the basic moveset will remain more or less the same, it being dependant on the exact stance mod you've slotted into your weapon. However, players will now get to dictate what sort of combo they're using by hitting directional prompts instead of trying to trigger hold or wait combos.
Furthermore, there are now both light and heavy attacks, with heavies functionally replacing the channeling mechanics. You can hit the heavy attack prompt at any given moment, and the animations will conform to execute said move. Developers are hoping to get two different heavy attacks done for every single weapon/stance combo.
The airborne slam attack will also get two different variants - heavy and light, with light functioning virtually the same as the one we currently have. Heavy will allow for directional input, giving your Warframe some time to consider the situation at hand.
Airborne melee in general is going to work much like that of Devil May Cry does, actually, with every combo being available both on ground and in the air, too. Also interesting is the ground cover move, which players will be able to trigger to, well, cover ground fast.
There's more stuff under the wraps, too, but that about covers what is already in place. Developers have mentioned that the melee rework is about 50% done, and that they've got a sort of a parallel to the current channeling mechanics in mind, too, but no concrete word on that's been given just yet. Excited much?
