Today, in news that don’t come as a shock to anyone, we’ve learned Embracer Group is parting ways with publisher Arc Games and developer Cryptic Studios. The giant will retain the rights to the Remnant series and Fellowship though.
We’re rapidly approaching the end of 2025, so that means big entities are rushing to make big changes to their structures and let go of anything they see as dead weight and/or an opportunity to make quick cash. When it comes to Embracer, the public is well aware the giant has been biting more than it can realistically chew for years, and news the powers that be are divesting more hastily acquired properties isn’t a surprise.
The press release we’ve had access to is full of convoluted corporate talk as usual, so here are the key points and how the changes may or may not affect the entities affected:
- Net cash proceeds amount to approximately USD 30 million (SEK 287 million).
- Project Golden Arc, owned by members of the Arc Games management team, is buying. Global games publisher and developer XD Inc. is financing the deal.
- Arc Games is the publisher behind games like Remnant II, Torchlight, Hyper Light Breaker, Chips n’ Clawz vs. the Brainoids, and Fellowship. Cryptic Studios is the studio behind MMORPGs Star Trek Online and Neverwinter.
- The publishing rights for the Remnant franchise will go to Embracer-owned THQ Nordic, which already owns the IP and studio Gunfire Games.
- The rights to Fellowship are being transferred to Coffee Stain, which is expected to be spun off from Embrace in December 2025. Chief Rebel (developer) is expected to continue work on the game as it targets a full release the future.
At the time of writing, layoffs or more tangible changes haven’t been announced, but should any changes hit the publishing and development teams, it’s likely that Arc Games will be the group being reshaped into a leaner operation. We’ll be keeping an eye on what comes next and hoping for smooth transitions.
