Crate Entertainment is about to make Farthest Frontier a lot more lively - and a little more chaotic - with its first DLC. The Cats & Dogs DLC introduces pets that have a real impact on this city building sim.
The city builder’s first paid expansion, the Cats & Dogs DLC, launches on May 14, and it finally answers an important question: yes, you can pet the dog.
But this isn’t just a cosmetic addition. Pets will play an active role in your settlement, adding new systems, new threats, and a surprising amount of personality to your growing town.
Key features in Cats & Dogs DLC:
- Start settlements with a pet companion
- Breed multiple cat and dog variations
- Cats reduce rat populations
- Dogs defend crops and livestock
- New threats including foxes and groundhogs
While it may seem like a small addition, the DLC meaningfully changes how players manage food, pests, and settlement defense.
You can pet the dog in Farthest Frontier, and it actually matters
Watch the Farthest Frontier Cats & Dogs DLC reveal trailer below:
Players can start a new settlement with either a dog or cat companion that travelled alongside their settlers, immediately adding a new layer of life to the early game.
Each animal comes with practical benefits:
- Cats roam freely and help keep rat populations under control
- Dogs can protect hunters and defend crops and livestock from hostile wildlife
These companions also interact with villagers through tricks, idle animations, and, yes, plenty of attention-seeking behaviour, including the occasional poop left behind for you to clean up.
“As they did in historical times, cats and dogs provide vital services, from pest control to protection,” said Arthur Bruno, CEO and Creative Director at Crate Entertainment. “Cats help keep rats at bay while dogs defend against threats like foxes and other wildlife.”
New animals, threats, and breeding systems
The DLC also expands the world beyond your settlement walls.
New animal types - groundhogs and foxes - introduce additional activity and danger. Groundhogs can devastate crop fields, while foxes prey on chickens, creating new pressures on your food supply and economy.
Players can also build kennels and doghouses, allowing them to care for and breed animals. Over time, you’ll be able to raise multiple variations of cats and dogs, adding both visual variety and a sense of progression to your settlement.
More ways to customize your settlement
Alongside the new systems, the DLC introduces decorative options, including gardens and other aesthetic additions, giving players more ways to shape the look and feel of their towns.
While it may sound like a small addition on paper, pets bring a new layer of simulation and activity that makes settlements feel more alive, and a bit less predictable.
