More indie survival horror games continue to pour in as veteran series like Resident Evil try new bold approaches. Enter The Florist, the project from Unclear Games which aims to scare with fixed camera angles and “floral growth” turned into striking enemies.
“The Florist tells the story of Jessica Park, who arrives in the lakeside town of Joycliffe to make a last-minute delivery. Her timing sparks disaster as the town quickly descends into a deadly game of survival against omnipresent floral overgrowth. Players must solve ingenious puzzles, defeat horrifying enemies, and uncover a mysterious plan to create new life in the most inhuman way imaginable.”
Alongside the announcement, which strangely doesn’t specify which consoles Unclear Games is targeting on top of its Steam launch, a first trailer was shared:
Though The Florist looks at first glance like yet another riff on the classics, the story pitch alone and the resulting enemy and level design should be enticing enough for most fans of old-school horror. Thankfully, a number of unique features, like a “world that grows and changes throughout the game” and an unlimited inventory system, should help it stand apart from its biggest influences.
Game Informer was able to exclusively talk to Unclear Games founder and CEO Phil Larsen, who said the first ideas for The Florist started “mostly by sitting down with a coffee and sketchpad, drawing maps and thinking about cool locations, puzzles, and routes between areas.” The biggest planned hook? Trying to be colorful horror game versus the thick darkness and dull colors commonly associated with the genre: “The floral theme lets us experiment with color and growth, which is rare in horror.”
The entire chat is worth a read and makes it clear the Unclear Games team isn’t biting more than it can chew with this one. Needless to say, we’re excited and planning to keep tabs on the developer’s efforts.
