Gears Tactics' announcement came out of nowhere during E3 2018, surprising fans as it sees the series stepping away from the third-person shooter genre.
Instead, Gears Tactics aims to put its own brand of brutality in a turn-based strategy context while retaining many of the elements that make the series recognizable to so many gamers. Here's everything we know about Gears Tactics, including details about its release date, gameplay, and story.
Gears Tactics Release Date
Gears Tactics' release date still largely remains a mystery. Its E3 announcement didn't give us an idea about when we might expect it, and news regarding it have been scarce ever since.
Judging by the pre-alpha footage included in its first showcase, it's likely that Gears Tactics still has a bit to go before it's ready to launch. It was conspicuously absent from E3 2019, however, in the meantime, we did learn that the title is developed by Splash Damage and will arrive on both PC and Xbox One.
Gears Tactics Story
Gears Tactics' story takes place 12 whole years before the events of the first Gears of War title. It will feature a brand new player-created squad tasked with hunting a Locust monster maker responsible for the destruction of entire cities.
Gears Tactics Gameplay
As far as gameplay goes, Gears of War does seem to share certain similarities with XCOM. Each squad member comes equipped with their own customizable weapons and abilities while cover plays a rather important role. Large bosses will also be part of the equation.
Of course, cover and giant bosses were very much present in the original Gears of War, so one could argue that Tactics is staying true to what made the series great. To that effect, there's even a portion when the camera zooms closer to one of the squad members allowing players to target enemies using their mouse.
Where can you buy Gears Tactics and how much does it cost?
Gears Tactics is currently not available on any stores whatsoever. That being said, given how it's set to arrive on the PC and Xbox One, you can bet it will end up on the Microsoft/Xbox Store.
It's also worth keeping in mind that Gears 5 made its way to Steam and, seeing how Gears Tactics was introduced as the first title in the series built with PC in mind, it wouldn't be all that surprising to see it on Valve's storefront as well.
Gears Tactics Trailer
The only Gears Tactics trailer (or footage, for that matter) currently available is its announcement at E3 2018. In it, The Coalition's Rod Fergusson takes to the stage to introduce the new title and give a brief overview of its features.
