Critics recently had the chance to play a massive 30 hours of Death Stranding 2 during a preview event, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. While it looks like director Hideo Kojima has another successful Death Stranding game ready to launch, the creator says that while he has an idea for a sequel, he won’t be the one making it.
Death Stranding 2 will take place in multiple locations, primarily Mexico and Australia, thanks to the Plate Gate system. This is a new feature that, in this game, connects the Americas with Australia. “If I use this Plate Gate concept, I could make endless sequels,” Kojima said in an interview with VGC. “I, of course, don’t have any plans to do that.”
According to the interview, not only is Kojima not planning on making Death Stranding 3 based on the Plate Gate system, but he says someone else will lead development on a third game in the series if Kojima Productions decides to work on it. “I already have a concept for another sequel,” Kojima says. “I am not going to make it myself, but if I passed it on to someone else, they could probably make it.”
The current gaming landscape is a challenging place to release a game. 2025 has already had some of the highest-scoring games of all time. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Blue Prince, Split Fiction and Despolete all have scores of more than 90 on review aggregate site Metacritic. Despite the huge number of highly rated games launching in the span of just a few months, it appears that gamers will need to make room on their shelves for a few more exceptional releases.
