Stronghold 4’s release date hasn’t been fully locked down just yet, but we do know that it is currently aiming for a 2026 early access release window. Since developer Firefly Studios aims to spend “around six months” working on the game alongside the community, its full version will likely launch at some point in 2027.

Stronghold 4 Gameplay
Gameplay-wise, Stronghold 4 promises the expected blend of castle management and warfare that made the series as popular as it is. We’ll place farms to feed the peasants fueling our economy, collect taxes, while using special structures and new mechanics to enhance our siegecraft and combat capabilities.
Not only will we build sprawling castles of our own, which we must defend against enemy sieges, but set off to assault our opponents’ fortresses, all while getting rid of pesky bandits.
Stronghold 4 boasts larger maps than its predecessors, while new in-game events and changing weather that impacts both the battlefield and our economy add further variables that we’ll need to account for.
Snow significantly slows crop growth, while archers have a much harder time hitting distant targets under heavy rain.
Stronghold 4’s early access version includes a prequel story campaign of 22 missions alongside a full skirmish mode with 8 unique CPU opponents, a free build sandbox mode, as well as a curated skirmish trail of bespoke scenarios.
To this strong foundation, its full release will add online multiplayer, a co-op skirmish trail, an economic campaign, and more.

Narratively, Stronghold 4 is a prequel that follows the tale of Penryn of Wethel. Once a simple shepherd, we follow his journey as he is forced to take on the role of a leader
His path from peasant to knighthood will see him interacting with both new and returning characters.
