The idea of StarCraft expanding with a shooter isn’t new. For the longest time, StarCraft: Ghost was a reality, but that game never hit the shelves. Almost 20 years after its cancellation, however, we might be finally getting a spiritual successor of sorts led by Far Cry veteran Dan Hay.
It’s not the first time we’ve heard rumblings of such a project. The rumor mill was reactivated in 2024, when Jason Schreier (Bloomberg) was promoting his book on the rise, fall, and future of Blizzard Entertainment. During a conversation with IGN, he casually revealed a new StarCraft shooter was in development at the Activision-owned studio.
Only a few weeks later, job listings suggested Blizzard was hiring for an open-world shooter to be led by ex-Far Cry boss Dan Hay (as revealed by Schreier). It all lined up. Now, more noise comes from Windows Central’s Jez Corden, who’s put together a big preview for Xbox’s 2026, which is expected to be a key one for the brand. After a 2025 full of bad headlines, multiple waves of layoffs and studio closures, and, more importantly, criticism related to Microsoft’s ongoing support of Israel’s genocidal ambitions, Xbox will need more than a few strong releases (most of its studios remain extremely talented) to turn things around.
In any case, Windows Central seems to be doubling down on its claims of this StarCraft shooter (said to be a third-person one) being real and eyeing a reveal at this year’s BlizzCon. “I confirmed these rumors true via my own sources a while back,” Corden adds.
Xbox’s leadership has been quite vocal about their love for Blizzard’s most iconic franchises, and that includes StarCraft, which hasn’t really seen much movement outside the regular but insignificant patches SC2 has received in recent years. A new project, no matter its genre, would mark a long-awaited return to one of Blizzard’s most celebrated properties, so this could be one of the most talked-about games of the next few years if it’s indeed happening.
