If you’re a regular reader, you know we like to dig up totally overlooked upcoming indie games from time to time, and we think we might’ve found a future winner in Skarven, a boomer shooter with a uniquely dense atmosphere and big narrative ambitions.
“Fallow fields birth strange life. Battle botanical abominations and a fanatical militant cult as you journey through a dark and distorted vision of the Danish countryside.”
Developer Mygind Mathorne paints a very specific picture with the official description of their upcoming FPS. At first glance, it looks like many recent boomer shooters, but the meticulously calculated art style and direction, plus promises of a narrative-oriented journey inspired by Half-Life, have made it jump near the top of our most-anticipated indie games list.
Most of the plot is being kept hidden in the mist for now, but we’re told we’ll be visiting “an alternative Danish past where lumbering spirit beasts wander a fallow land reeling from a man-made disaster 15 years prior.” Retro-futuristic elements meet Danish folklore too, so we’re not exactly sure of what to expect.
When it comes to the moment-to-moment gameplay, it seems the action will be fast and furious instead of slow, with slides, dodges, and parries making this boomer shooter feel completely modern instead of too traditional. It’s a pitch we can totally accept. In fact, it’s among the most promising we’ve read in a good while.
At the time of writing, we don’t know whether Skarven will hit other PC platforms outside of Steam or consoles, so we’ll be keeping tabs on its development and potential release plans.
