The 4X subgenre of strategy games is a crowded one, especially when it comes to huge space-set ones released in recent times. Innovation can be tricky, but SavGus Studio’s Solar Wave – which takes place in the 21st millennium – could have a fresh ace up its sleeve: indirect control of units.
Right now, the release window is set for mid-2025. SavGus Studio’s (seemingly solo) developer Dmitry confirmed his current release target in the comments section of the game’s debut trailer when asked about it. As part of the initial post for Solar Wave on Steam, he admitted “there is still a lot of work ahead,” but judging from our first look plus the available screenshots, it seems to be coming along nicely.
Though SavGus Studio is a very small operation for now, the basic premise of Solar Wave seems crystal-clear: Large-scale space strategy without the hassle of massive military campaigns. Exploring stars, colonizing new worlds, and capturing territories – much like in Stellaris or Endless Space 2 – are part of the central loop, yet task-based “indirect control of fleets” means the leader/player can focus on the big picture instead.
According to the dev, more focus has been put on the “advanced economic model,” which includes production chains, logistics, and gradual growth of both systems and massive fleets. Likewise, battles are said to be “epic” in scope, with thousands of ships converging on single points.
While it’s far too early to tell how it all will come together in the end, the screenshots released so far are intriguing, to say the least, with a rather clean UI and very readable art. Mind you, it’s all very much in development, but we can discern the vision behind Solar Wave already and are hoping for the best.
As it stands, Solar Wave is set to release only on Steam.
