Dense sim games set in outer space have been enjoying quite a bit of popularity as of late, and Cambium Studios is joining this wave with Starship Command: Orion Spur, a “starship command experience” which aims to take players inside the bridge without sacrificing the epic scope of capital ship warfare.
First revealed earlier this year via the game’s (quite busy) YouTube channel and its own website, the game allows players to take control of “the Ajax-class destroyer CSV Leonidas” at a time of uncertainty and war in galactic history. We’ve yet to learn about its original sci-fi universe, but it’s abundantly clear it’s inspired by a handful of classics while trying to do its own thing. The bridge gameplay sections alone shown off so far should make most Star Trek fans happy.
Even though Cambium Studios has already set up a Kickstarter campaign (launching soon) and a Discord server, it’s urging players to take a look at what its plans for the epic spaceship sim are first. In the age of many kickstarted games going nowhere, we appreciate the transparency.
Needless to say, there’s a long development road ahead of Starship Command: Orion Spur before it nears a release on PC (only Steam for now), but Cambium Studios is promising to take things slow and listen to its community. This has been the correct approach for many simulator games targeting specific niche player bases in the past, so we’re interested in seeing how this one pans out.
Last but not least, here’s the list of promised features at the time of writing:
- Lead from the Bridge: Issue orders to your crew in real-time tactical combat.
- Take Direct Control: Seamlessly switch to piloting your ship through the void.
- Know Your Crew: Walk your ship and interact with officers between missions.
- Deep, Meaningful Story: Make decisions about the conflict and how you fight when the rules of war collapse. What will you become to defeat the enemy?
