Call to Arms - Gates of Hell: Ostfront, a standalone expansion of the original Call to Arms, continues to be a fascinating mix of the RTS and third/first-person action genres in a brutal WWII setting. It’s also become much bigger through several content packs of its own, and the upcoming Finest Hour DLC (the largest to date) is promising over 170 new vehicles, among other things.
While co-op developers Barbedwire Studios and Digitalmindsoft haven’t shared a release date for the DLC yet, we’ve been told it’s coming soon, and considering all the screenshots and details up on Call to Arms - Gates of Hell: Finest Hour’s Steam page, it’s safe to think it’ll arrive soon.
On top of all the multiplayer-oriented content and the absurd amount of new units and vehicles, the two campaigns will be as in-depth as the previous ones:
“The Commonwealth campaign consists of 7 scripted missions and 3 skirmishes, portraying the British Expeditionary Force in the first desperate days of “Fall Gelb” in the West, followed by the action on D-Day capturing Pegasus bridge and the offensive action around Caen. This is followed by action - packed missions for Operation Market Garden and the paradrops in Germany - you will be there from the first to the last day of the war on the Western front!
The German campaign consists of 5 scripted missions and 1 skirmish. This campaign depicts what would later be called “Blitzkrieg”; starting with the first chaotic but victorious days in France, fighting and surrounding the French and British armies as Rommel’s 7th Panzer (“ghost”) division, followed by missions later in the war defending the Atlantikwall and several counterattacks in Normandy and during Operation Market Garden. The grim struggle for control of the Scheldt estuary rounds out the war in the German campaign.”
Finest Hour, of course, retains the mix of real-time strategy and third/first-person shooter action for both infantry and vehicle combat the Call to Arms series has become known for. Few WWII-set games have been as ambitious as them in terms of sheer scope and ways to experience the carnage, so we’ve been consistently (and repeatedly) impressed by the devs’ big efforts to make Gates of Hell even larger than it already was.
At the time of writing, here’s the rest of the information we have on everything coming with the gigantic DLC:
- Large asset collections for the Netherlands and Flanders with over 1000 assets in total.
- 170 new vehicles for the Commonwealth and Germany
- Over 500 human models and over 100 equipment items for the Commonwealth
- The Commonwealth faction for conquest and multiplayer in early, mid and late war
- A singleplayer campaign for the Commonwealth featuring 7 storyline missions and 3 skirmishes
- A singleplayer campaign for Germany featuring 5 storyline missions and 1 skirmish
- 20 new multiplayer maps
- 25 new conquest maps
