Over the last decade, the real-time tactics genre has seen a steady resurgence, bringing isometric stealth-focused gameplay – as popularized by titles such as Commandos – back into the spotlight.
Prohibeast, the latest project from French indie developer collective Super AC, takes these very tried-and-tested foundations and puts its own spin on them, following a daring, capable band of crime fighters who have a bone to pick with the mob.
Prohibeast Puts Us in Charge of A Crew of Crime-Fighting Specialists
Prohibeast’s version of 1930s Chicago looks quite different from our own. Populated by anthropomorphized animals and riddled with corruption, the sprawling city has had meat consumption outlawed.
Unsurprisingly, the ban led to a surge of black market operations distributing these forbidden goods, with none other than Al Capone himself – depicted as a feline with very little patience for nonsense – securing his place at the top of the chain.
It’s here that Eliot Ness and his team of Untouchables step in, working in the shadows to disrupt the mafia’s efforts and restore order across Chicago. Taking control of Ness & company, we’ll undertake a series of missions, each one challenging us to carefully plan our routes, time distractions, and take out enemies when they least expect it.
The most straightforward path is not always the safest, as Ness and his crew often find themselves outnumbered, so making use of hiding spots and alternate pathways is key to ensuring a successful outcome. Avoiding sightlines is just one part of the stealth puzzle, as we’ll also need to take our foes’ acute hearing and keen smell into account.
Thankfully, Ness and his crew of specialists each bring unique abilities that provide the tools to overcome specific obstacles in Prohibeast.
Where the team’s canine leader boasts high adaptability and, perhaps more importantly, a semi-automatic pistol, Malone B. Clonan – his right-hand man – doesn’t shy away from getting up close and personal. Frank E. Eager, on the other hand, prefer sniping enemies from afar, taking full advantage of his sharpshooter skills
These are only some of the specialists we’ll encounter as we clean up several districts across Chicago, from The Loop – the city’s hub of corrupt power – to the mayor’s mansion and the Lake Michigan docks.
Mastering their strengths and weaknesses turns the Untouchables into a well-oiled justice-dispensing machine. When plans don’t quite go as expected, quick save and quick load options allow us to jump back in while adding a small dash of nostalgia for older gamers.
Prohibeast is set to release on June 3, 2026, when it arrives on PC via both Steam and the Epic Games Store.
