Fans of dark fantasy settings and roguelike deckbuilders with heavier strategic elements should keep an eye on Beatrix, the next game from Tambù Digital. The best part? You can play the demo right now on Steam.
Beatrix allows players to shape the battlefield by deploying Canones (Canons) to come up with all-new strategies. Meanwhile, tactical positioning must be used to “surround and flip” Beatrix’s enemies.
“Hell is in a state of unrefined chaos. As Beatrix, you have been summoned to the Circles of Hell to uncover an anomaly rotting the afterlife. To restore order—or dismantle it entirely—you must master the Psychomachia (“battle of the soul”), craft a lethal build of Canones (“Canons”)—powerful effects that alter your battlefield—and survive a descent into the frozen heart of Treachery.”
While deckbuilding roguelikes have been around for a while, Tambù Digital (also in the business of tabletop RPGs and boardgames) aims to shake things up with “deep board-build strategy” and persistent effects deployed before each battle. On top of those systems, Genius build archetypes and rare Reliquiae (Relics) can be stacked to trigger “massive chain reactions.” Experimentation is encouraged, but Beatrix isn’t another relaxed deckbuilder betting most of its chips on RNG.
The positional combat aspect is described as “a high-stakes bid for territory” witch every card placement. You can even flip enemies to join your side and take over the entire board. In this game, one “single clever move can turn a crushing defeat into a total takeover of the field.”
The “grotesque” but gorgeous art style covers the entire journey through the Circles of Hell, where decisions alter Beatrix’s power and define the growth of your entire build. Hidden paths and multiple endings have been teased, too.
While Tambù Digital hasn’t set a release date for Beatrix yet, we know it’s coming exclusively to PC via Steam and you can download and play its demo right now.
