Square Enix is hosting a two-part special stream event this weekend starting Saturday, January 25th, at 4:00 AM PST. It's their 12th instalment in their 'Letter from the Producer LIVE' series for FFXIV. The MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn has come to Steam as Square Enix officially launch it on the digital platform. A special promotion is in effect for US and EU users with 50% off all editions. This little deal will run from now until Tuesday, February 25th. Then Square likely wants you spending time with Eidos Montreal's Thief which releases the same day in the US.

The Final Fantasy series, outside of MMOs, hasn't been visiting the PC space much. There's the occasional HD-remake that strikes out on desktops but major modern instalments have all stuck to console. That could very likely change, according to Final Fantasy producer Yoshinori Kitase. Final Fantasy XIII was built on PC but then later ported, as Square was 'unsure of PC'.

Square Enix has set loose over 650 MB of patch 2.16 on MMO Final Fantasy XIV, adding a number of UI changes, as well as expanding the company profile of 'free companies', i.e. guilds or clans. Publisher Square Enix is discounting a number of PC titles with Steam keys through their digital storefront this weekend in celebration of the Easter holiday. A bunch get their price tags halved, including Thief. There's also Tomb Raider GOTY edition, The Last Remnant, Final Fantasy VIII, Hitman: Absolution and even Urban Chaos. Each use Steamworks to deliver the goods.

While there hasn't been an official report yet, Square Enix has revised up their net sale projection for the fiscal year now passed. It has exceeded their initial expectations, thanks to stronger sales filling coffers. Strong sales in particular from Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn, the MMO 'rebooted'. What helped too was "favorable sales" from Tomb Raider and Thief.

Square Enix has announced a PC version of JRPG Final Fantasy III is soon to arrive on Steam bringing with it "new and improved 3D visuals" and story sequences, with Trading Cards and Achievements. The 1990 RPG was the first in the long-running series to sell over a million copies, and first reached Europe in 2007 as a 3D remake for Nintendo DS. Now it's heading for Steam.

Square Enix's slightly confusing approach to releasing Final Fantasy games over Steam continues (FFVII, FFVIII...FFIII?), with Final Fantasy III the latest classic title to make it onto Valve's online retail service. Available tomorrow, May 28, the updated version is "optimised for PC gaming with new and improved 3D visuals and story sequences". Square have also added in Steam Trading Card support and new visuals for the game's Job system.

Square Enix has kicked off a free login weekend for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn today, which runs until Monday 21 July and allows players to check out the new Defenders of Eorzea patch 2.3. Rather than a chance for new players to try out the game this is aimed at lapsed subscribers. To be eligible for the event you'll need to have purchased and registered the game before, but currently have an inactive account.

The biggest news is probably that Square Enix is making good progress with the upcoming, as yet untitled, expansion. Fans will hear more about it at the company's Fan Festival 2014 on October 25.
