New XCOM 2 enemy announced; meet the Andromedon News

What, you thought you'd just be dealing with the same old hulking Mutons and Berserkers in XCOM 2? Guess again. A new hulking mass of organics and machinery is going to be entering the fray. Say hello to (or run for your life from) the Andromedon.

ADVENT's Dark Event Counter-Operations explained in XCOM 2 blog update News

Gamers will remember the shadowy human organization ADVENT from the XCOM: Enemy Unknown expansion Enemy Within. The group was a Ninth Column for the alien invasion, collaborating with them to disrupt XCOM's operations, even invading the player's base at one point. In XCOM 2, their role is changed. Since the aliens have successfully taken over the Earth, the group serves as the aliens' counter-terrorism division, with your XCOM team as "terrorists".

XCOM 2 up for pre-order, Firaxis kicks off free weekend for XCOM: Enemy Unknown on Steam News

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is one of the best games of the last few years, a razor-sharp update of a classic series, packed full of engaging, tense strategic combat and full of opportunities to make really bad decisions that will get all your soldiers killed. If you've yet to try it out for some mad reason, you can do so over the next few days - developer Firaxis is holding a free Steam weekend for the game, from now until September 13.

XCOM 2 has been pushed back to February 2016 News

2K and Firaxis Games have broken my fragile heart by announcing that XCOM 2 has been delayed into February. I'm joking. Mostly. Actually, considering the wealth of excellent titles out this year, a bit of a break might not be such a bad thing. Anyway, giving developers a bit of extra time to polish and refine is generally a good idea.

New screenshot suggests you can export XCOM 2 soldiers News

Eagle-eyed Reddit posters have spotted an interesting little bit of text in a new XCOM 2 screenshot released by Firaxis – the shot of the sequel's soldier customisation screen shows a menu button that reads 'export character'. What that actually means, we still don't know – it could simply mean that you can shift your favorite troopers between saved games, but it also suggests you might be able to trade them with your friends. It's all speculation until the developers confirm it, but given the expanded customisation options in XCOM 2, the ability to save a cosmetic copy of your star soldiers would be a logical next step in the game's ongoing attempt to make you feel awful when you get them killed by plasma grenades.

Take a tour of The Avenger, your XCOM 2 mobile HQ News

If you're interested in checking out your new digs in XCOM 2, you might want to check out this twelve-minute thoroughfare of the good ship Avenger, your mobile HQ. According to Firaxis, from the bridge of the captured alien vessel you'll be able to "manage research and manufacturing resources, recruit and customize soldiers, upgrade weapons, armor and abilities, and ultimately build a global resistance network to combat the enemy occupation."

Firaxis is considering a remake of XCOM classic Terror from the Deep News

Released in 1995, MicroProse's XCOM: Terror from the Deep is one of the most beloved entries in the long-running strategy series, a deep-sea spin on the alien invasion template that added new challenges, new alien enemies and a cool, vaguely Lovecraftian aesthetic. It's an entry that fans would like to see developer Firaxis revisit, given their successful reboot of the franchise with XCOM: Enemy Unknown and Enemy Within.

New XCOM 2 screens show off expanded customisation options News

XCOM 2 developer Firaxis has released a huge batch of new screens for the highly anticipated alien-hunting strategy sequel, focusing this time on your base of operations, Resistance HQ. That means we get a much better look at the most important part of XCOM; naming your tiny soldiers, kitting them out in the latest tech, and making sure they have the best haircuts and threads in the business.

Meet the new and improved Muton from XCOM 2 News

You guys remember Mutons from XCOM: Enemy Unknown, right? You'd be merrily blasting sectoids apart with rocket launchers or punching stealth squids in the head, and suddenly these great big b******s would lumber round the corner, plasma rifle blaring. Makes me angry just thinking about it. And it sounds like they'll be even more of a danger in XCOM 2 – the aliens have been experimenting with human DNA, resulting in a smarter, deadlier Muton. Gulp.

Firaxis 'doubling down' on soldier customisation in XCOM 2, nationality will determine "accented voices" News

Naming the brave souls on the frontline battling the alien invasion in XCOM 2 is just the first step in deeper customisation that Firaxis is developing. We can also affect gender and nationality, including voiced accents. Not every accent will be represented, admitted senior producer Garth DeAngelis, but there'll be a good selection with "more English accents" too. Want a Chinese solider with a thick Scottish bark? Sure!

XCOM: Enemy Within never happened in XCOM 2's universe News

The 'aliens have taken over the world' premise of XCOM 2 is a pretty cool one, but it does kind of invalidate our hard-earned victories in the first game. In fact, as it turns out, expansion pack XCOM: Enemy Within didn't happen at all. "It's funny, because we talk about lore in Firaxis games, and the narrative isn't exactly what compels us forwards," Xthe game's senior producer Garth DeAngelis told PC Gamer. "But when we do talk about this timeline, again, it's like Enemy Within never happened. Because you lost. You lost within the first third of the game."

E3 2015: First gameplay footage of XCOM 2 shows a different kind of war News

Firaxis gave IGN a seven-minute look at the new, resistance-themed gameplay of XCOM 2 at E3 2015 yesterday, and the game's looking like a smart new spin on XCOM: Enemy Unknown's already excellent combat. It looks fantastic, and I'm particularly impressed with the way the developers have managed to twist the setting. Rather than a humanity's last defence, your squad of rag-tag troopers are now public enemies, despised by a brainwashed public fully in thrall to the alien leaders.

Firaxis explains why XCOM 2 is a PC exclusive News

XCOM 2 is coming to Steam this November as a PC exclusive, complete with snake-headed mutant enemies and a new post-invasion setting that places the poor human race even further into the role of unfortunate, plasma-gunned underdog. Given the success of the previous game's run on consoles, it's something of a surprise that developer Firaxis has chosen to release the sequel, at least initially, solely on PC.

2K Games announces XCOM 2 exclusive to PC this November News

Put away your probes and take off those tinfoil hats. 2K Games has just beamed into our minds the knowledge we've all been searching for: Firaxis is working on XCOM 2. What's more is that it's PC exclusive. It's a full sequel to 2012's highly lauded XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Things haven't turned out so great for humanity, and the XCOM initiative has had to go dark as the Advent Government rises.

2k Games announces re-imagining of XCOM, exclusive to PC and Xbox 360 News

2K Games announced today that it's working on the re-imagining of XCOM, one of gaming's most beloved franchises. The game is currently in development at 2K Marin, the studio behind BioShock 2. Exclusive to Xbox 360 and PC, XCOM combines the strategic core of the franchise with a suspense-filled narrative and first-person shooter experience.

E3 2010: 2K's XCOM reboot is confirmed to release in 2011 News

No specific date was attributed to the reboot of XCOM when 2K unveiled it back in April, but now they want it known that next year is their target. This new XCOM title is to be a first-person shooter for Xbox 360 and PC. It ditches the turn-based strategy formula of the veteran PC franchise.
