EA Unveils Command & Conquer Generals 2, coming 2013 exclusively for PC News

During the weekend at the Spike Video Game Awards, EA confirmed that BioWare is working on Command and Conquer Generals 2, which will be released in 2013 exclusively for the PC. Powered by the frostbite 2 engine, Generals 2 once again puts players in the middle of an all-out war between three unique factions - GLA and EU are confirmed, but the third faction will be revealed later. It will be developed by the newly opened BioWare Victory studio, which has veterans from past C&C games on the team.

EA Montreal studio lent DICE's Frostbite News

Johan Andersson of developer DICE is on route to Montreal, Canada to visit a studio using the Frostbite engine which powers Battlefield 3. It was also used in Need for Speed: The Run. The upcoming Command & Conquer: Generals 2 is also using Frostbite. EA's Montreal digs include BioWare and EA Montreal itself. What projects could use the engine tech?

Robot Entertainment is made up of former Ensemble veterans with Age of Empires to their name. Patrick Hudson of the studio still believes real-time strategy can be big business. Battlefield developer DICE has its own fancy engine technology that goes by the name Frostbite 2, and now the studio teases that some 2013 titles using it will need a 64-bit OS. It's a "great opportunity to upgrade" to Windows 8, says DICE rendering architect Johan Andersson. The majority of PC users don't use 64-bit, but do PC gamers? Let's hope so.

Developer Phenomic has announced that their free-to-play, browser-based online real-time strategy game, Command & Conquer: Tiberium Alliances, has exited beta testing and is officially live. Players choose one of two classic factions,, the Global Defense Initiative (GDI) or the Nod. As they harvest resources and build armies, players must form strategic alliances with their neighbors for offensive and defensive purposes.

Fan-made 'Tiberium Crystal War' reaches 1.5, total conversion for C&C Renegade News

The classic C&C Renegade from EA has been converted by a mod team so that it features vehicles, structures and locations from Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars. It's a standalone creation so it doesn't need the original game to play. The mode from MPF has reached version 1.5 and weighs in at 670MB. They've converted as many assets as possible.

Origin and GameSpy multiplayer will be down later today News

Electronic Arts has announced that both their Origin and GameSpy servers will be taken down for maintenance, which will shut down multiplayer gaming for several games for roughly three-and-a-half hours. The downtime will be later today from 10PM PDT / 1AM EDT / 6AM GMT to 1:30 AM PDT / 4:30 AM EDT / 9:30 AM GMT.

The new Command & Conquer from BioWare Victory, which was to be C&C: Generals 2, has become a free-to-play affair from EA. It will launch without a singleplayer campaign, but 'will get one'. Community manager EA_CIRE acknowledges that many will say "that this is not a 'true' C&C," but says that applied to the original Generals. For him, C&C "isn't just about Tiberium, Kane" and Yuri.
