Square-Enix has announced in its investor's report that Deus Ex: Human Revolution has sold over 2M units worldwide in the month spanning the 23rd August and 30th September. One of the more interesting factoids is that the game was a bigger hit in Europe than North America, selling 1.38M in the former and 800K in the latter.
Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada is reportedly promising two to three Deus Ex games in the next few years. This came during a financial briefing in which the CEO outlined plans to establish ten new IPs to have "a continuous profit contribution" to the company.
We take a look back at 2011's highlights...
The digital chart for retailer Amazon has Square Enix's Deus Ex: Human Revolution wearing the 2011 crown, with Battlefield 3 coming 2nd. EA also claimed 3rd and 4th. In the physical chart - surprise, surprise - Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 sat upon the throne, followed by Just Dance 3 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. No Deus Ex.
There's still noise about Deus Ex: Human Revolution stuttering on PC despite these complaints having surfaced around the game's launch last year. Eidos Montreal is yet to address it. Neither Eidos nor Square Enix has done much to solve the problem claim PC gamers. Even with settings low it still stutters. It's almost like some global conspiracy.
Stephane D'Astous, boss of Eidos Montreal, argues that because games are "less based on one or two mechanics" these days, they're "more sophisticated" and so reduce the need for new IP. Reviving old classics like Deus Ex and Thief was "almost like a new IP, certainly in the effort." The general feeling "three, four years ago" was to spit out a few new IPs a year.
Eidos Montreal GM Stephane D’Astous has said Thief 4 will be about more than "just stealth".
It seems that the PlayStation 2 version of Deus Ex will be coming to the PlayStation 3, as the PEGI ratings have listed a PS3 version of Deus Ex. The game was rated at 16; Deus Ex: Human Revolution was rated for mature gamers with an 18.
As revealed by PEGI a few days ago, Square Enix has announced that the PlayStation 2 version of Deus Ex will be hitting PlayStation Network. If that weren't enough, the PS2 version of Just Cause is now available on PSN, with Conflict: Desert Storm 2 and Conflict: Vietnam to follow later in May.
The accounts look good for Square Enix thanks to 2011's Deus Ex: Human Revolution and this year's Final Fantasy XIII-2, which helped bring in a profit of ¥6 billion. Last year lost ¥12 billion. The figures were "favourable" thanks to those two "major titles" in the Square Enix line-up. No specifc sales numbers have been divulged for either release, but Deus Ex has at least shipped 2m.
PS2's Deus Ex is now available to buy on the EU PlayStation Store for the PS3. it weighs in at 1360MB and is priced £7.99 and €9.99. Also up for grabs is PSOne's Outlaws of the Lost Dynasty. Elsewhere there's PixelJunk 4am, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode II and now digitally Saints Row: The Third. There's DLC for Max Payne 3, Asura's Wrath and Final Fantasy XIII-2.
Square Enix's Deus Ex: Human Revolution will be available to download for free to EU PlayStation Plus subscribers as it becomes the new Game of the Month, until August. There's also "50% off exclusively" for PS Plus subscribers if you want to grab the DLC packs as well. There are 9 other titles in the Instant Game Collection now available for free.
CBS has acquired the screen rights to Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and will be co-producing the project with Eidos Montreal. The film will be produced by Adrian Askarieh, who had previously worked on the Hitman film, and Roy Lee, who had produced the American remakes of The Ring and The Grudge.
The next two weeks of Xbox Live Marketplace is meatier that it has been this Summer, as not only does the Summer of Arcade conclude with Hybrid and Dust: An Elysian Tail, but some of the biggest downloadable content will be landing. The DLC includes the Cold Stream DLC for Left 4 Dead 2, the Firefight Pack for Mass Effect 3, the third DLC pack for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, as well as some Quantum Conundrum content and an online multiplayer upgrade for Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World.
Sony has announced that the PS3 Essentials are now available for digital distribution on PlayStation Network.
Tomorrow for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC there will be new DLC for United Front's Sleeping Dogs in the form of the Square Enix Character Pack. This dresses up Wei Shen in three distinctive ways. The Hitman outfit features a bald, red-tie suited Shen. Deus Ex lets him keep his hair and adds those cool Jensen specs, and augmented tactical suit. Finally there's Rico's island regime changing garb.
CBS Films released a presser announcing that Scott Derrickson will be directing the big screen adaptation of Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Derrickson's resume includes Sinister and The Exorcism of Emily Rose.
Director and co-writer Scott Derrickson for the planned Deus Ex film says "everything is kind of happening all at once," on the project. They have their draft of the script that "everyone seems excited about". While the film is based on Human Revolution it's not after the video game, as their "chief philosophy" is that they're "making a cyberpunk movie," not a 'game movie', says co-writer C. Robert Cargill.
Square Enix has filed a trademark for Deus Ex: Human Defiance, indicating a sequel to Human Revolution could be on the cards.
Terrible news for Deus Ex: Human Revolution fans as while Square Enix and Eidos Montreal have announced a much improved Director's Cut, all the goodies are being kept exclusive to Nintendo Wii U. It's revealed that boss fights have been reworked by the Montreal team so they aren't bullet-fests, although each boss still has to die because of the story. Energy recharges two cells as well now.
