The final release date for Carmageddon: Reincarnation, the crowd-funded and subsequently Early Access-ed fourth entry in the long-running vehicular homicide series, has been pushed back a month. Reincarnation was originally intended to make it the doors on April 23, but developer and original franchise creator Stainless Games has moved the date back to May 21.

Original series creator Stainless Games has announced that the game's final, official release date will be April 23. They've also provided a nice rundown of everything fans will get in the final version.

What was kept quiet however was their Carmageddon project which would have brought the cult classic to the next-gen console scene. The UK's BBFC has slapped a 15 certificate on the front of THQ and Volition Inc's Red Faction: Armageddon, meaning it's all clear for the shops. Yes the end of the world (on Mars) can be enjoyed by bloody thirsty, property damaging and car stealing 15 year-olds. It's got "strong violence and language".

Indie creating new Carmageddon, Square Enix don't own the IP News

Publisher Square Enix don't hold the rights to Carmageddon or its website as they, or rather Eidos, used to. Stainless was the creator of the Carmageddon series. It will apparently be announced at E3 but won't be shown on the floor. The rights have returned to Stainless, but don't seem to be behind the development.

Stainless Games has reacquired the Carmageddon brand and is currently developing a digital download version called Carmageddon: Reincarnation. The developer was originally behind PC versions of Carmageddon and Carmageddon 2: Carpocalypse.

Stainless "paid real money" for Carmageddon IP to Square Enix News

A rather hefty sum was forked over by Carmageddon creator Stainless Games to get the IP back in their hands, but only because Square Enix bought Eidos. They had tried to get Eidos to sell them the IP back, or at least get licensed work for it, but it never happened. Square selling it was a "surprising decision".
