State of Decay 3’s release date brings us the next entry in developer Undead Labs’ celebrated zombie survival series. Returning to a ravaged, post-apocalyptic world, the third entry in the series sees us trying our hand yet again at facing an evolving threat while lending our help to different communities of survivors.
As is often the case with sequels, State of Decay 3 is expected to bring a set of improvements that further expand the series’ tried and tested formula. Below, we break down everything known so far about State of Decay 3’s release window, supported platforms, gameplay details, trailers, and the latest updates from the developers.
State of Decay 3 Release Date
Unfortunately, State of Decay 3’s release date remains a mystery at this point in time. Following its announcement, the game fell off the radar before emerging once more in April 2026 with its alpha playtest announcement. Two months later, publisher Xbox Game Studios confirmed the survival game is aiming for a broad 2027 release window.

State of Decay 3 Gameplay
State of Decay 3’s gameplay is based on the formula established by its predecessors.
That means lots of zombies to kill or avoid while navigating an open world and helping out local communities with their needs.
The developer has confirmed that “the choices you make affect in-game events and storylines.” Should a community member die to the zombies, they’re gone forever, which also means we can no longer make use of their abilities.
We’ll also get to “build, develop, and expand a base that reflects your designs and choices” while using an arsenal of melee and ranged weaponry to make sure we don’t end up dead.
One new addition comes in the shape of Plague Nests, which are described as an evolution of State of Decay 2’s Plague Hearts.
They are “dynamic sources or hubs of enemy encounters that players can go in and destroy” with “multiple ways [in which] they behave and grow.”
The threequel makes the jump to Unreal Engine 5 while introducing two attack buttons, one for a quick attack, another for a power attack.
Although the zombie roster “is the same as SOD2, but evolved,” the more specialized foes we’ll face should lend themselves to a fresh combat experience.
As far as map size goes, we can expect a “playable space for a player [that] is about 4 times the size of a single State of Decay 2 map,” all of it being available from the very start.
State of Decay 3 will also feature online multiplayer that supports up to 4 players.
State of Decay 3 Story
In State of Decay 3, our efforts are in service of “pushing back the blood plague to reclaim the land’s resources and carve out a life in the zombie apocalypse.”
Faced with “an evolving zombie threat,” we embrace the survivalist homesteader life while likely encountering others who are striving to avoid joining the ranks of the infected.
State of Decay 3 Price & Platforms
- State of Decay 3 will release on PC, via Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
Its price remains unknown for the time being. We expect to learn more in the future, as State of Decay3 gets closer to its release date.
State of Decay 3 System Requirements
As of April 2026, State of Decay 3’s system requirements haven’t been officially announced. Since alpha playtesting kicks off during the month, it’s likely that Undead Labs wants to wait until further along in development before sharing details about the PC specs we’ll need.
