Koei Tecmo's Berserk Character Guide
Koei Tecmo and Omega Force are well on their way to their next video game. Having tackled many popular anime and manga franchises already for Omega Force’s open battlefield style of action hack n’ slash style of video games, the publisher and developer has now turned its eyes over to the Berserk series. Players will be able to take on roles of relevant characters and battle iconic villains throughout the anime and manga’s history. Given the nature of Berserk’s story and graphic content, over-the-top, blood-soaked violence is practically a given.
Don’t know much about Berserk? That’s okay. Koei Tecmo has released a slew of new info about what we’ll be seeing in the game, including some of the systems that will be at play and a few of the characters that will be playable. Much of what has been shown so far seems to take place during the Black Swordsman and Golden Age Arcs of the story, but will probably continue forward past that point as well. The site is in Japanese, but we can share a bit of an overview regarding the playable characters revealed so far. Have a look!
Guts
Guts is the main protagonist of the Berserk series. A grim man wielding an enormous sword known as the Dragonslayer, Guts is defined by his sheer strength and willpower, coming face to face with death on numerous occasions often times coming out as a sole survivor. Originally traveling as a freelance mercenary, Guts’ strength and skill drew the attention of Griffith and his soldier corps, the Band of the Hawk. Defeated by Griffith in a duel, Guts was forced to join up with the Band for a time, though many of them did not trust him. Guts strength and determination would eventually push him up the ranks of the Band until he was essentially Griffith’s right-hand man. He would also come to develop a secret relationship with Casca, a strong female warrior in the Band. Eventually, Guts takes it upon himself to protect Casca over all else, no matter what. Throughout all of Guts’ adventures, he is known as an insanely strong swordsman, respected if not feared by those around him.
Griffith
Griffith is the incredibly charismatic leader of the mercenary group known as the Band of the Hawk and is also prodigious in his talent with the sword. He brought the Band of the Hawk up from being a ragtag group of thieves into one of the most noted mercenary groups in the land, becoming known as the White Hawk himself. Though his looks are fair and almost ambiguously gendered, Griffith is a better fighter than most in the land, even having defeated Guts in a duel that forced Guts to join his band. Guts quickly moves up the ranks in the Band of the Hawk and Griffith comes to rely on him not just as an ally, but also as one of the few people he considers a dear friend. Griffith’s greatest desire is to become powerful enough to obtain a kingdom of his own to lead over: A goal he pursues without rest. So obsessed is Griffith with this dream, that there is nothing he wouldn’t give to obtain it… even if it means sacrificing everything and everyone around him.
Casca
Casca is a strong warrior and the only female member of the Band of the Hawk. She was saved from thieves who had kidnapped her as a child by Griffith and brought into his fold. In turn, Casca developed immense respect and loyalty for Griffith, giving herself to him as his sword. Her skills rival most any other member of the Band and she wished nothing more than to become Griffith’s most trusted soldier. When Guts was brought into the band, Casca and he hated each other. This only grew as Guts came to be the soldier Griffith trusted most. This resentment formed a rivalry for some time and the two of them fought and bickered regularly. However, after Guts saves her life, Casca begins to slowly begin to develop secret feelings for Guts: a fact that does not escape Griffith’s attention.
Judeau
Out of all of the Band of the Hawk, Judeau is easily the most optimistic and outgoing. When Guts is defeated by Griffith and forced to join the Band, Judeau is the first to befriend him. The two of them quickly become close allies, despite the fact that Guts initially resents many other members of the Band. Judeau is fiercely loyal to all of his friends, especially Casca, whom he secretly loves. He does his best to always keep the mood light and keep everyone happy, occasionally playing his lute in order to raise spirits. When it comes time for battle, Judeau is a nimble and dexterous marksman. He has excellent skill with throwing knives and is also pretty good at fighting while on horseback. Throughout his time with the band, he proves himself to be far more than just a smiling face.
The Berserk universe is a rich one filled with many characters and fighters. Given Koei Tecmo and Omega Force’s propensity to fill their games with numerous and various characters, we can definitely expect to see quite a few more characters make their appearances. When the word comes, we’ll be sure to share those characters here with you. Stay tuned!
