Black: The Fall, the atmospheric, gloomy side-sroller from Sand Sailor Studio, is now available on Steam Early Access.
”Inspired by a childhood passed behind the Iron Curtain”, Black: The Fall is set in the ruins of an industrial world inhabited by unpredictable and sometimes deadly ‘natives’. A demo for the game was launched earlier this year, and it went on to have a successful stint on Steam Greenlight.
Black features a combination of action, stealth and puzzle-solving. Sometimes you’ll need to sneak past foes, but there’s plenty of the old ultra-violence too - shooting is location-specific, so blasting an enemy in the leg will cause his limb to fly off in a spray of scarlet. Lovely stuff.
After Limbo and a raft of other games, that black and white aesthetic is at risk of becoming over-familiar, but to be fair Black seems to handle it well, with brief flashes of colour and a misty, dreamlike atmosphere. It’s got a very Half Life 2 feel to it too, with those strange industrial structures recalling the skyscrapers of the Combine.
“The Early Access path will bring us together with you, the actual gamers, and your invaluable feedback. The game will grow organically as we exchange ideas and I’m sure that we will end up with a more polished game and a stronger experience for everyone,” says the game’s producer, Cristian Diaconescu.
Hope so, Cristian. You can currently grab Black: The Fall via Steam for 20% of its regular RRP of £5.99.
