Capcom has announced that its upcoming brawler Street Fighter 5 is being developed with the Unreal Engine 4, the first time in the series’ history that Epic’s powerful software has been utilised.
That might explain why the upcoming entry is looking so tasty. Capcom showed off a new and improved engine in an initial gameplay trailer released at this year’s Capcom Cup event.
“Our goal with the next generation of Street Fighter is to take our beloved fighting game franchise and bring it to our fans in the best way possible,” explained Capcom producer Bochan Kim. “In order to fully deliver on that promise, we know we have to incorporate the latest and greatest technology available, which is why we partnered with Epic Games to power Street Fighter V using Unreal Engine 4.”
Street Fighter 5 is the second major fighting game to confirm use of the Unreal Engine 4, with fellow heavy-hitter Tekken 7 also set to utilise Epic’s powerful software. Both titles are also coming to PC - it’s not a traditional platform for fighting games, but PC gamers are experiencing something of a golden age for the genre these days.
Still in the early stages of development, Street Fighter 5 is expected to release in late 2015, or more likely sometime in 2016. It’s a PC and PS4 exclusive.
