Bethesda’s upcoming DOOM reboot sadly won’t feature full modding support, but it will at least come with a rather nifty level editing tool called SnapMap.
Essentially, this bit of kit allows players to quickly slot together levels to play in co-op and multiplayer, or, if you’re not the creative type, search a content hub for the best community offerings.
Bethesda has released a video that was recorded at E3 earlier this year, which shows off the tool in action. “You can go to a level of detail that lets you create completely custom game modes,” says Id Software’s executive producer Marty Stratton.
We don’t get to see any game modes being cooked up in the accompanying gameplay footage, but hopefully SnapMap can balance ease of use with a reasonable amount of complexity. DOOM is set for release in Spring 2016.
