The 2015 World League of Legends Championship will be held in Europe this October, developer Riot Games has announced. Like last year’s tournament, held in Taipei, Singapore, and Korea, the 2015 championship will be staged across multiple countries.
”Our goal is to bring live esports action to a broad base of fans across Europe and to provide an exciting and diverse backdrop for fans watching at home,” Riot says.
”Europe has been a home for LoL esports since the very first steps in our journey. It’s the setting for the EU LCS, the host for many memorable esports tournaments and events, (including our inaugural World Championship in 2011, IEM, Dreamhack, and last year’s All Star tournament) and the home of some of the most talented players to dominate the game. It feels great to bring the 2015 Championship back to players and fans who have played such a big part in our story.”
Last year’s tournament was won by Korean team Samsung Galaxy White, who fended off Chinese opponents Star Horn Royal Club in the final to take home $1,000,000 in prize money. Like all big esports events, the numbers are pretty incredible; the 2014 grand finals were watched cumulatively by 27 million people, and audience figures peaked at over 11 million concurrent views.
Riot aren’t quite ready to detail schedules, locations and overall format just yet, but details on those should emerge in the next few months. This esports stuff is very cool. I just wish I could get into MOBAs on any level.
