Schell Games has announced a new Kickstarter campaign for the indie developer’s mix of real-time strategy and rogue-like RPG, The Nullpoint. The developer is seeking to raise $115K to complete its title.
The Nullpoint puts players in the role of a group of survivors who have crashed on strange, alien structure orbiting Saturn. Their sole shelter is the downed shuttle. In order to survive, the player must send them out as a group to scavenge for items to repair and upgrade their ship.
Resources are scarce, so players must make hard decisions on how to proceed ”Do you repair the healing systems or the item dispenser? Do you rig together a station to upgrade your weapons instead? Or, do you play it safe, and repair the ship’s fraying outer hull?” the developer asks. The best resources are in the deepest reaches of the structure, but also, of course, the most dangerous.
Like any good rogue-like, levels are procedurally generated, and the mortality rate is high. Players can expect members of the crew to die; it’s just a matter of deciding what the risks are. The story will continue even if just one survivor is left, but they must carry on alone.
According to the Kickstarter, the game is inspired by such titles as Darkest Dungeon, Faster Than Light, The Binding of Isaac, and Dark Souls. The common thread of those games is their high difficulty level, which appeals to the indie developer. ”We love hard games – games that force you to evaluate your choices carefully, and give your choices meaning by raising the stakes on what you stand to lose,” states Schell Games.
