Star Wars: Battlefront is due late this year and DICE has just released some teasing concept art for the game. They also reveal a ”great variety” in both map size and game modes we’ll be fighting through.
In fact the studio decided to ”specifically tailor certain maps” meaning Hoth is a vast tundra, because of the invasion of Hoth by AT-ATs, while Endor’s Moon is more compact due to the dense woods.
”…and what we get from that is not only incredibly varied scales, but also gameplay that will allow players to live out some of their most memorable Star Wars battle fantasies,” Design Director Niklas Fegraeus told IGN. The studio is using ”internally developed photogrammetry systems.”
Frostbite Engine will couple its love of destructible environments with great attention to visual detail. Photogrammetry was most recently used in The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, IGN points out.
“Perhaps the hardest part about bringing the franchise back is managing expectations,” said Fegraeus.
“Star Wars fans, including ourselves, are incredibly passionate about the universe. Each of us have our own personal favorites. However, with the talent we have here at DICE, the Frostbite technology at our fingertips, and the fantastic working relationship we have with Lucas, I believe we will deliver a Star Wars experience that excites fans around the world and gives them the chance to play out battles in some of the most iconic locales in the series history.”
We’re expecting to receive fresh detailed info on the new Battlefront in the coming months.
”We’ve been showing the game to some close partners and one of the things we hear is that it doesn’t feel like other shooters and that it’s fully born from Star Wars. That really strikes a chord with me and the team as that is exactly the emotion and feeling we are going for and we can’t wait to show the world more this spring.”
The previous Battlefront games have include locations such as Jabba’s Palace and Mos Eisely on Tatooine, Naboo, the Rebel base on Hoth, the Death Star, Endor’s Moon, Kamino, Kashyyyk, Geonosis and even the Bespin Cloud City.
Star Wars: Battlefront releases on PC in late 2015.
