Paradox Interactive showed off some of its new games during its GDC 2016 Twitch.tv Stream tonight, including Hearts of Iron IV, a Kickstarter for a card game based on Magicka, and Stellaris. However, the announcement everyone was waiting for was to see what its project with Obsidian Entertainment would be.
Fans were not disappointed, as the companies unveiled their new roleplaying game, Tyranny.
Tyranny is a game where the climactic battle between good and evil for the fate of the world has already been fought - and evil won. Now, Kyros the Overlord rules a battle ravaged land, and players take on the role of one of the Overlord’s minions, traveling the lands to act judge and executioner of Kyros’ will. The game’s non-linear structure allows the players to explore the conquered world, interacting with the populace, with the power to inspire loyalty, disgust, or fear. It’s up to the player.
“Four years ago, we hoped the world wanted to be reacquainted with classic, story-rich RPGs. As it turned out, the answer to that was an emphatic ‘yes,’” Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart spoke of the project in the press release. “Since then, there’s been a renaissance in RPGs thanks to games like Pillars of Eternity, Wasteland 2, Divinity: Original Sin and others. What’s incredible is that we’ve been able to continue evolving the types of RPGs we make since Obsidian was founded in 2003.” He went on to state Tyranny had one of the scenarios the studio always wanted to explore: what if evil won?
“In Obsidian, we’ve identified a partner whose development and design ideals are a perfect match for our own,” said Fredrik Wester, CEO of Paradox Interactive. “We’ve been involved with Tyranny from the ground up, and are proud to be working with the Obsidian team on the creation of this unique world. This will mark a bold step for Paradox into the RPG genre, and we can’t think of a better partner to have for the journey.”
Tyranny is scheduled to release in 2016, and gamers hungry for more info on the game can check out the official site here.
