Borderlands 3 is real! We all knew it already, but Randy Pitchford got on stage during this week's GDC to demonstrate how Unreal Engine 4 has affected the development of the gun n' loot sequel.
Unreal Engine 4 is the next big thing for video games. There's no doubt about it. While many developers still look to make their own engine to fit the needs of their game, Epic's Unreal Engine tech has been the go-to choice for a lot of titles both big and small over the years.
While we're not to expect any specific gameplay demonstrations from the show itself, Randy did rock up to the show with multiple scene examples built using the Borderlands style to showcase how the game could look once we get a solid look at the game's progress.

First talking about how they're using the newly upgraded Unreal Engine 4 to highlight even more detail through Borderlands' signature outlining effects, we go on to see how real-time shaders and cross-hatching techniques are being used to show off more detail than what's typically seen within the Borderlands universe. Next up is the engine's lighting tools with a simulated explosion within a darkened, interior scene for good measure.
Specifically mentioning how it's purely a tech demo for now, it's enough to hint as to what to expect further down the line. We can hope for some solid Borderlands 3 footage at this year's E3, but don't hold your breath.
