PS3 Sky Player "may very well happen" someday, 'general desire'

Griff Parry, Sky’s director of On Demand, has left no room for being misunderstood that they do actually have a desire ”to extend to any device” that’s good quality to ”project” content.

Currently the PS3 offers BBC iPlayer streams freely in the UK. Sky Player is currently available exclusively for Xbox Live, for those with Gold membership and a Sky subscription.

A PlayStation 3 Sky Player ”may very well happen in the future,” notes Parry. Microsoft has already lost exclusivity with Netflix in the US, who announced their extending to Sony’s platform.

”I can talk generally about our desire to extend to any device that supports a good quality experience to project the content. The PS3 is clearly a device where that is possible. And so it may very well happen in the future. Having said that, we’re very happy to be working with Xbox for the time being.” This is yet another battle zone for the platform big boys now.

Microsoft had to pull the launch of the Sky Player its first day, citing that huge demand from users had crippled the service. They said it would now be rolled out in phases to ensure everyone can sign up to the service and view its streamed content, which isn’t HD.
