Despite the Xbox 360 being the top selling console system for the 15th month in a row, the videogame industry suffered low sales in March 2012, according to the NPD Group. Sales overall had dropped 25% in hardware sales in comparison with March 2011.
The Xbox 360 owned 42% of all console sales with 37K units sold, but dropped 13% in comparison with 360 sales of March 2011. The PlayStation 3 came in second at 337K units, down 6% from the previous year. The Wii suffered the largest plummet, coming in at a distant third - fifth when including the Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita - with only 175K unit sales, representing a 40% plummet from March 2011.
From a pure revenue standpoint, sales of consoles and other hardware were $323.5 million, a 35% drop from March 2011. Total gaming sales, which includes hardware, software, and accessories, earned $1.1B, down from $1.47B from the same period last year.
The best selling game was Mass Effect 3, with 1.3M unit sales, followed by Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, MLB 12: The Show, NBA 2K12, the SSX reboot, and Street Fighter X Tekken.
