It was noticeably absent at E3 and Gamescom for PlayStation. 3D ”just doesn’t seem to be a major factor,” said EA COO Peter Moore. Very few publishers have backed 3D as a feature.
Sony has been the one to champion the 3D arena with many 2011 titles getting a third dimension added, but outside of Sony very few have bothered to implement it.
”And what an oracle I seem like!” Peter Moore joked, referring to his 2010 suspicion of 3D gaming.
”3D is certainly not in any way on our list of things we are focused upon as a company. I look at gaming, and it just doesn’t seem to be a major factor.” If anything it’s the British consumer, not the US, that’s taking up 3D more readily. ”I’m always impressed when I go home to the UK by how many people watch TV in 3D. Much more so than in the US. The Olympics was available in 3D. I bet it wasn’t available in 3D in the US,” he added.
”It’s just not a technology particularly in our world of gaming that seems to have got traction. If I was sceptical 18 months ago I remain sceptical.” It seems Sony’s enthusiasm has rubbed off on neither gamers nor studios. However SCEE’s Jim Ryan comments we shouldn’t read too much into absent 3D propaganda at this year’s major events.
Sony will continue to include stereoscopic 3D in titles ”where it makes sense” to do so. ”We spoke about it at E3 two years ago and everyone put their glasses on for the first time, and the next year we did the same and everyone did it again. Y’know, there comes a time when you don’t need to talk about it anymore,” concluded Ryan.
