The sources also revealed that Sony considered making the PS4 a download-only console, but decided not to implement it, chiefly because there simply aren’t enough stable broadband internet connections worldwide. This in addition to the failure of the PSP Go, which left a bad taste in Sony’s mouth.
The same report has announced that the next generation Microsoft console would use an optical disc drive, and will not be using Blu-Ray. Microsoft also decided against a download-only console due to worldwide internet concerns as well.
Retailers still expect that at some point, consoles will adopt an online-only model. According to GameStop CEO Paul Raines, ”If we all agree the technology is inevitable—which I think it is because it’s like death and taxes—it’s still going to take longer to happen than it did for music and movies.”
Next-gen console announcements are not expected by either Microsoft and Sony at E3 2012.
