Their games division is down 15% in revenue to ¥268.5bn for the quarter ending December 31st. Operating income tumbled 86% to ¥4.6bn. Hardware and software sales drop blamed.
Those are some nasty figures. Sony no longer reports PS3 sales separately from PS2, so combined they sold 6.8m units Q3, which falls from the previous year’s 7.4m.
The full fiscal year forecast for hardware sales remains at 16 million units, which is 2 million less than the previous full fiscal period. While unit sales for handhelds have gone up, game sales for PSP and Vita are down. Hardware expectations plummet from 16 million to 7 million by the end of March, which concludes this fiscal year.
Overall software sales have dipped, with consoles going from 68.7 million to 61.7 million and handhelds from 11.4 million to 8.9 million. Sony Corp has a whole did however see revenue increase by 6.9%, with a loss of ¥10.8bn posted for the quarter, which is a dramatic improvement from the previous year of the same period which lost ¥159bn.
It is widely reported that an announcement for PlayStation 4 will herald February 20th in New York City.
