The penalty was levied against Sony for failing to inform its customers that personal information had been stolen from 77M accounts. The ICO stated the publisher “let everybody down”, and that it was “the most serious breach we have had reported to us.”
Sony has responded that it feels the verdict is wrong and will appeal it, claiming it was the victim. ”Criminal attacks on electronic networks are a real and growing aspect of 21st century life and Sony continually works to strengthen our systems, building in multiple layers of defence and working to make our networks safe, secure and resilient,” stated a spokesman.
”The reliability of our network services and the security of our consumers’ information are of the utmost importance to us, and we are appreciative that our network services are used by even more people around the world today than at the time of the criminal attack.”
Sony seems to fail to realize it was the fact the company didn’t tell its customers for over a week that their accounts were compromised is the reason it’s being given this relatively mild punishment.
