Willits: Original Doom 4 production "did not have the spirit" of a Doom game

Tim Willits of id Software has explained why the Doom and Quake dev ditched the original production of Doom 4, saying it "wasn't one thing" that could be singled out like art or code, but a general lack of 'soul'.

The studio felt it suffered from an "identity crisis," and didn't really feel all that Doom-like which is "very hard to articulate." Both id and Bethesda felt it needed to be rebooted.

DOOM 3 BFG Edition announced for 360, PS3, PC

Bethesda Softworks has announced the DOOM 3 BFG Edition will be in Fall 2012, which will include DOOM 3 and the Resurrection of Evil expansion. The game will be fully remastered, and will also include The Lost Mission which adds seven hours of new content.

Doom 3 source code now available from id Software

While the source code to id Software's Doom 3 was already primed for release it was the lawyers that kept it from going forth on the Internet, but now the ambulance chasers are satisfied.

John Carmack twittered that it's finally in the hands of aspiring developers who want it. Apparently some of the code was rewritten because it made the legal suits nervous. Github has it.

Doom 4 multiplayer to get "quality feel that Rage has" at 60 FPS

John Carmack of id Software reveals that as soon as Rage is completed, he and the other "core tech team" members will be focusing everything on Doom 4.

While singleplayer on consoles is 30 frames per second so they can have "30 demons crawling all over," multiplayer will kick it back up to Rage's 60 FPS.

Doom 4 "going great" says id, team 'kept separate' from Rage

The development of Doom 4 is "going great" with the game shaping up to be "awesome," says id design director Matt Hooper. It's not a D3 sequel or reboot.

Extremely little is known about the next instalment to Doom. There's no overspill between Doom and Rage teams though, the studio "keep them separate".
