Mina the Hollower is out now, and as soon as the adventure starts, you’ll be asked to pick a main weapon. If you have doubts and don’t want to make things harder for yourself than they need to be, here’s our easy recommendation.
Mina the Hollower starter weapons explained and which one to pick
After the initial attack on the ship, Mina rushes downstairs and is told to pick a main weapon from a chest, with three very different options on display. It’s a rather important choice that’s instantly thrown at players, as it takes a while to regain access to all of them. Here’s the quick rundown:
- Whisper and Vesper: A pair of daggers that do exactly what you’d expect. They’re fast and have a short range of attack, but can deal a lot of damage quickly if you tap the attack button repeatedly.
- Nightstar: A mace linked to a chain. It’s a whip-like, Castlevania-inspired melee weapon with very respectable range and decent damage.
- Blaststrike Maul: A massive hammer that can be charged up by holding down the attack button and releasing a devastating hit on any enemy. You can roll while charging it up. Otherwise, it deals low damage with a quick close-range attack.
While all three Mina the Hollower starter weapons are fun to master, most players might want to pick the Nightstar first. The basic damage output is solid enough; it has faster speed than you’d expect; and more importantly, it keeps you away from harm with the right positioning.
Both Whisper and Vesper and the Blaststrike Maul require Mina to be closer to the enemies, which will result in running into enemy sprites (and taking contact damage) very often. This is especially frustrating while fighting bosses, which is something I noted in my review. On the other hand, the Nightstar allows you to put a bit more distance between Mina and her enemies while repeatedly chipping away at their health.
Last but not least, we must underline the weapon you choose will be the only one you have for like a couple of hours at least and until you reach the city of Ossex. There, you can buy another one from the local weapon shop if you have enough bones, or double down on the same one to gain new abilities.
While out adventuring, you’ll also find other primary weapons that aren’t sold, so that’s yet another reason to pay attention to your surroundings and complete side quests.
