John Carmack, president of id Software has said it’s hard to try and pinpoint exactly what’s caused the PC to fall from grace. ”You can say piracy. You can say user migration.”
While speaking with Tom’s Games he says that id still thinks PC gaming is ”worth supporting” but decisions aren’t finalised with the platform in mind.
Curse the ravages of time. id’s CEO Todd Hollenshead last year cited piracy on PC as the reason for the company to go multi-platform at the Games Developer Conference.
”It’s hard to second guess exactly what the reasons are. You can say piracy. You can say user migration,” Carmack said at this year’s QuakeCon.
”We still think the PC is a market worth supporting, but we’re not making decisions around the PC,” he added. ”It’s probably more of the junior partner in the cross-platform strategy, although obviously, our day-to-day development is predominately on the PC.”
The world without a future release of Doom on PC ”would just be wrong” admits Carmack. ”Even if it was a marginal business case, we would still do it because it’s the right thing to do.”
Their upcoming post-apoco shooter Rage is coming to PC as well as on the consoles. ”We’re contractually obligated to have Rage on the PC,” which is great because it’s the closest thing we have to an up-to-date Mad Max.
