There is nothing worse than spending four years of your gaming life on World of Warcraft, only to have your account hacked, voiding your hard work. Blizzard are aware of the cruel fate that can occur at any moment and have moved to stop it.
For an optional 6 Euros you can purchase a key-chain sized Authenticator (much like the Modern Bank-security keypad). The device generates a six digit code which is valid once, is unique and is only active for a short period of time. Combining that with your name and password, it should be much more difficult to hack accounts. Obviously the new security measure is optional and it can be bought at the Paris Blizzard event on the 28-29th of June. It should be available online shortly after.
Mike Morhaime, the CEO of Blizzard Entertainment explained the scheme:
“It’s important to us that World of Warcraft offers a safe and enjoyable game environment. One aspect of that is helping players avoid account compromise, so we’re pleased to make this additional layer of security available to them.”
