David Jefferies of Black Rock Studios has said the corporate giant has rescinded their demand for all developers to produce their games at 1280x760 resolutions.
Developers are now free to make ”the trade-off” between image size and quality. Most homes deliver 1366x768, though 1920x768 screens are becoming more common place.
”We are making a trade-off and saying that the screen resolution is more important to us than the quality of the anti-aliasing,” said Jefferies in his Develop article.
He notes that both next-gen platforms can push out 4xMSAA and 2xMSAA, but the 1280x760 demand from Microsoft made it difficult to achieve.
”This isn’t necessarily an entirely voluntary move because, until recently, Microsoft had a TCR insisting that games run at 1280x720 – providing you weren’t one of the lucky ones like Halo, who got it waived and ran at 1152x640, that is,” he added.
”It’s is for this reason that Microsoft recently retired the TCR insisting on 1280x720. Now we are free to make the trade-off between resolution and image quality as we see fit.”
So if your early Xbox 360 title looks a little naff in the anti-aliasing area, blame Microsoft.
