The Entertainment Merchants Association have done some research, got some figures together and now plastered them over a report for this year.
According to those numerical squiggles, a staggering 87 percent of PS3 owners not only know they’ve got Blu-ray in the living room now, but they actually watch Blu-ray movies on it too.
Their report states that the PlayStation 3 is ”the primary driver behind Blu-ray sales, with 87% of PS3 owners watching Blu-ray movies on their console.” In 2006 the EMA saw Blu-ray as the losing platform but its ‘07 rebound is thanks to Sony’s next-gen console.
They believe the PlayStation 3 will be ”the main force behind Blu-ray disc sales until 2009, when standalone Blu-ray players are expected to outpace the sales volume of the PS3.”
This is all at odds with an NPD survey last year claiming that 60 percent of PS3 owners were clueless that their sleek console even had Blu-ray functionality. So according to the EMA the PS3 is the saviour of Blu-ray, or at least for now, but the NPD says we can’t read a box.
Are you a PS3 owner who watches Blu-ray?
